MINUTES OF THE HINGHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE
October 26, 2009
Regular Session
The meeting was called to order by Christine Smith at 7:37 p.m. at Hingham
Middle School.
Members Present: Christine Smith, Linda Hill, Barbara Cook, Caryl Falvey,
Chrisanne Gregoire, Esther Healey, Steve Nagle.
Central Office Present: Dot Galo, Ellen Keane, David Killory, Jean Curtis Loud.
Visitors Present: Roger Boddie, Doug Holley, Jennifer Lowe, Chuck Cormier, Ellen
McNulty, Derek Smith, Helaine Silva, David Riordan, Mary Power, Tina Sherwood,

Communications.
The Committee heard a report from Hingham Middle School. Roger Boddie,
Principal, spoke about Hingham Middle School making AYP in math for the special
education subgroup and projected HMS enrollment growth and space issues (79
grade 6-8 sections (41%) of core subjects are 25 or over). Derek Smith and Dave
Riordan, Assistant Principals, reported on the new grade 6 schedule and
enrichment courses, including study skills, mathematics enrichment, presentation
skills and ELA enrichment. Committee members asked questions and thanked Roger,
Derek, and David for their reports.
Student Communications.
Brian Fiske reported on the following: Peer tutoring program, juniors – first
Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) assignment, National History Day competition
theme “Innovation” and fall sports.
New Business.
The Committee heard a presentation by Selectman Laura Burns on the Town’s
financial position. Laura provided a review of the Town of Hingham, Economic
Summit, FY ’11 budget overview. Committee members thanked Laura for her
presentation and asked questions.
The Committee heard a report on the Terra Nova California Achievement Test (CAT)
Spring 2009. Ellen Keane reviewed the CAT and InView results for grades 3 and 6
for the 2008-2009 school year. Ellen noted that the grade 3 CAT and InView tests
will not be administered in the spring of 2010, due to reductions in the FY 2010
budget.

Voted: To appoint Chrisanne Gregoire as the official voting delegate for the
MASC/MASS Joint Conference 2009 November 18-20, 2009.
The Committee received information regarding a field trip of the grade 8 Earth
Science Club to the American Museum of Natural History, New York City, November
7, 2009.
The Committee received information regarding a field trip of the Model UN Club
to Sheraton Boston and Harvard University, January 28-31, 2010.
The Committee received notification of the appointment of Lisa Bonone as a food
service technician at East School, effective September 2, 2009.
The Committee received notification of the appointment of Lori Naughton as a
food service technician at East School, effective September 2, 2009.
Budget.
David Killory noted a forecast meeting scheduled for October 27, 2009.
Subcommittee Reports.
Long Range Planning – Chris Gregoire reported on the last two meetings including
short-term HMS space issues, Capital Budget proposal for FY ’11 and Walkaround
scheduled for November 22, 2009.
School Building – Steve Nagle noted meeting Tuesday, October 27.
Community Outreach – Christine Smith reported on a recent meeting.
Recycling Committee – David Killory noted a meeting to be scheduled in November.
Salary & Negotiations – Linda Hill noted scheduled meetings.
Superintendent’s Report.
1. NAEP results – Mass. grades 4 & 8 students ranked first in the nation for
math.
