MINUTES OF THE HINGHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE

 

November 9, 2009

 

Regular Session

 

 

The meeting was called to order by Christine Smith at 7:33 p.m. at Foster School.  

 

Members Present:        Christine Smith, Linda Hill, Barbara Cook, Caryl Falvey, Chrisanne Gregoire, Esther Healey, Steve Nagle.

 

Central Office Present:            Dot Galo, Ellen Keane, David Killory, Jean Curtis Loud.

 

Visitors Present:           Roger Boddie, Debbie Stellar, Ellen McNulty, Rosemary Littlefield, Marisa Costello, Beth Rockoff, Brian Fiske, Cynthia Galko, Laura Marwill, Irma Lauter, Dennis Friedman, Dana Donnelly, E. Eldredge, Mary Ford of the Hingham Journal.

 

On a motion by Linda Hill and seconded by Esther Healey,

            Voted:              To approve the Minutes of the Regular Session of October 26, 2009.

            Voted:              To approve the Minutes of the Executive Session of October 26, 2009. 

 

 

Communications.

 

The Committee heard a report from Foster School.  Debbie Stellar, Principal, led a tour of the Foster School renovated areas and rooms. 

 

Student Communications.

 

Brian Fiske reported on the following:  Movie at HHS “Beyond Belief”, Sweeney Todd musical, boys’ soccer won first playoff game, recycling competition – bottles, styrofoam trays, etc. and H1N1.

 

New Business.

 

The Committee heard a report from Building Committee Chair, Alan Mcdonald.  Alan provided an overview and update on the East School project and Foster & PRS renovations projects.  Committee members asked questions and thanked Al and the School Building Committee for their work.  Audience members asked questions.

 

David Killory introduced Lynn Petrowski, the new shared Food Service Director with Cohasset Public Schools and reviewed the reorganized elementary cafeteria management structure.  Committee members asked questions.

 

The Committee received information about guidelines related to awareness and mandated training on the new Ethics/Conflict of Interest regulations.  Dot Galo reviewed the guidelines.  Committee members asked questions.

 

 

The Committee heard an update from Richard McManus on the status of the Beal Street Academy.  Richard introduced Rosemary Littlefield, Principal of Beal Street Academy.  Richard and Rosemary thanked the School Committee for their support.  Committee members asked questions.

 

The Committee received information regarding new regulations and required policy regarding privacy of information.  Dot Galo reviewed the regulations.  Committee members asked questions.

 

The Committee received information regarding a field trip of the grade 8 French class to Quebec City April 30-May 2, 2010.

 

Subcommittee Reports.

 

Long Range Planning – Chris Gregoire reported on a meeting held before the School Committee meeting this evening, including a request to post a School Committee meeting on Thursday night, November 12,  input for school capital requests, Walk Around scheduled for Saturday, November 21st at 8:30 a.m., including a public tour of East School 12:00-2:00, and a tour of the Depot facilities November 19th.

School BuildingSteve Nagle noted a meeting in December. 

Recycling Committee – David Killory noted a district meeting next week.

Salary & Negotiations – Linda Hill noted a meeting last Tuesday and additional meetings scheduled.  Dot Galo noted a request from the Cafeteria Association to renegotiate. 

 

Superintendent’s Report.

 

1.         Elementary Specialist Scheduling for 2009-2010.  Due to budget cuts, three specialists for    music, Spanish and physical education are shared among four schools, resulting in changes         to program offerings and increased complexity of the scheduling process.

 

2.         Home sales data – first nine months of 2009.
