MINUTES OF THE HINGHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE

 

December 7, 2009

 

Regular Session

 

 

The meeting was called to order by Christine Smith at 7:34 p.m. at Hingham High School.  

 

Members Present:        Christine Smith, Linda Hill, Caryl Falvey, Chrisanne Gregoire, Esther Healey, Steve Nagle.

 

Central Office Present:            Dot Galo, Ellen Keane, David Killory, Jean Curtis Loud.

 

Visitors Present:           Paul Pawlowski, Karen Beatty, Rick Swanson, Jen Henriksen, Heather Lewallen, Ellen McNulty, Douglas Holley, Margaret Conaty, Paula Girouard McCann, David Jewett, Janet Duffy, Roger Boddie, Jeff Tocchio, Laura Marwill, Brian Fiske.

 

On a motion by Linda Hill and seconded by Chrisanne Gregoire,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the Minutes of the Regular Session of November 21, 2009.

 

 

Student Communications.

 

Brian Fiske reported on the following:  “Sweeney Todd”, Festival Show, “At the Bottom of Lake Missoula”, winter sports, band, chorus & orchestra concerts, Spirit Week, Hingham Harborwoman, Seniors Holiday Boutique, Debate Team 1st meet, early action and early decision.

 

Communications.

 

The Committee heard a report from Hingham High School.  Paula Girouard McCann, Principal, reported on the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award ceremony at Washington, D.C. and presented a Blue Ribbon Flag to Dr. Galo for the school district.  David Jewett, HHS math teacher, reported on the Metco Mentoring Program.  Jen Henriksen, Assistant Principal, reported on the Peer Mediation Program and showed a video from the John Halligan assembly.  Rick Swanson, Assistant Principal, reported on Global Education & Green initiatives.  Committee members asked questions and thanked Paula and her staff for their presentations.

 

New Business.

 

The Committee received the Hingham High School CEEB Testing and Placement Report for the Class of 2009.  Heather Lewallen, School Counseling Director, presented an overview of the report including post graduate plans (94% continuing education), SAT summary, SAT subject tests, AP tests, AP scholar designations.  Committee members asked questions and thanked Heather for her report.

 

On a motion by Chrisanne Gregoire and seconded by Linda Hill,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To approve the Town of Cohasset & Hingham Inter-municial Agreement for                                     School Food Service Director Position.

  

The Committee heard a request from Margaret Conaty, the Athletic Director, to allow parent transportation to out-of-town or nearby practice/game sites for swimming and hockey.  Committee members asked questions and discussion ensued.

 

On a motion by Caryl Falvey and seconded by Linda Hill,

 

            It was

            Voted:              To waive the current HPS transportation policy for the winter 09-10 sports                            season              and allow parent arranged transportation to practice/game activities at the Weymouth MDC facility for boys and girls ice hockey and swim team members and to the Norwell Head Over Heels site for the gymnastics team, with said practice to be reviewed by the Policy Subcommittee at the season’s end.

 

The Committee discussed a request from the Ward Street fields project proponents to utilize the Plymouth River School parking lot for overflow parking with a foot path access to the fields. Jeff Tocchio presented the request on behalf of the project proponents. Committee members asked questions. Steve Nagle volunteered to serve as the School Committee liaison to the proposed project.

 

The Committee discussed plans for live Cable broadcast from Town Hall.

 

Subcommittee Reports.

 

Long Range Planning – Chris Gregoire reported on a meeting before the School Committee meeting.

School Building CommitteeSteve Nagle noted a meeting on December 8. 

Salary & Negotiations – Linda Hill noted scheduled meetings.

Community Outreach – Christine Smith reported on a meeting last Saturday with the Advisory Board.

 

Superintendent’s Report.

 

1.         Letter to Selectman John Riley from Primrose Schools.

2.         H1N1 Flu Clinic Sunday, December 13, 1-4 at HHS for ages 10-24.
