ADULT/PEDIATRIC FRIENDS & FAMILY CPR/FBAO

1 Session:   March 14                                               Tuition:  $30

This basic life support course is designed for lay rescuers who want to prepare themselves to help and protect others (namely family members, friends and co-workers) in distress needing CPR or FBAO (Foreign Body Airway Obstruction: Heimlick Maneuver).  This skills workshop will prepare students to perform CPR and intervene in choking situations involving responsive adult victims, unresponsive adult victims, children, and infants.  Instruction will be modeled after new protocols established by the American Heart Association and released in April of 2006; a demonstration of the AED (Automated Early Defibulator) will be included.  No written examination is required.  A $5.00 material's fee will be collected from each participant at the beginning of the class for purchase of the newly revised AHA student text. This very useful and practical three-hour course is open to everyone, whether you have taken a CPR course before or not.  To insure that your CPR knowledge and skills remain current, it is recommended that you participate in this skills workshop every two years.

This CPR-Heimlich Maneuver and AED (Automated Early Defibulator) demonstration course is not sufficient for healthcare providers who need the course entitled CPR for Healthcare Providers.

BEGINNERS' YOGA - 12 Week Special Pricing

BASIC BOATING SKILLS AND SEAMANSHIP

Wednesdays:   6:30-8:30 p.m.                               Room 126

10 Sessions:  February 8 - April 25                       Tuition:  $15 (plus $45 materials fee paid directly to instructor)

This class is a must for new boaters or for boaters that feel the need to brush up on their boating skills.  Instruction on marine aids to navigation, boat handling, marlinspike seamanship, marine engines, "rules of the road", piloting,  radio marine communications, weather, choosing a boat, equipment necessary for your boat, and trailering your boat.  Materials fee of $45 payable to instructor on the first night of class.

CREATIVE WRITING - MEMOIRS, FICTION and more

Wednesdays:  6:30 - 8:30 p.m.                                   Room:  120

8 sessions:  February 8 - April 4                                Tuition:  $80

Become inspired to get started, continue on or finish creative writing projects.  This class will open up the writer's tool kit and spark the imagination - the key to successful writing.  Tools from the writer's kit will be discussed and will enable writers at all levels to demystify the process of writing and banish writer's block.  Reading materials will be provided along with in-class and take home writing assignments.  By the end of the class students will have completed scenes and stories of memoir or fiction.

ITALIAN - BEGINNING CONVERSATIONAL

This course is structured as an "enabling" course, teaching the student how they can build further competency from the basic instruction.  Emphasis is on pronunciation, simple sentence building, polite expressions, touristing skills, Italian culture, and especially how to use context and leverage to widen understanding of the language.  All levels of effort expended are acceptable, with out-of-class assistance willingly provided by EMail.

MICROSOFT EXCEL 2010 (Intro/Intermediate)

MAXIMIZE YOUR COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID

This one night workshop is a must for all parents of college-bound high school students, especially freshmen and sophomores.  We will demystify the college financial aid process and teach you how to access the more than $90 billion in financial aid dollars, monies that are even available to “high income” families and business owners.  Strategies will be presented that will help you protect your assets by maximizing your eligibility for aid, effectively lowering your college costs. You will learn the optimum time to set the strategies in place (Hint, best before junior year) and why if you wait until the financial aid deadline to file your forms, you may miss out on the full amount of aid you qualify for.  You will also learn how to minimize the equity in your home.  A free comprehensive analysis will be provided for those attending the class.

This seminar will offer a snap shot on the state of the current real estate market on the South Shore. Prices (supply and demand) clearly continue to drive real estate activity in an economy that continues to struggle with recovery, unemployment, and foreclosures. As inventories remain high  there is growing unrealized pent up demand for housing.... yet appraisals and mortgage qualification continue to be major concerns to buyers as opportunities abound with interest rates continuing to track at historic lows.

When to buy and sell will be the catalyst for  ongoing dialogue during this session.

This class is designed for parents in who have students in high school and middle school.  Some of the material, like preparing the college essays, is most beneficial to the parents of high school juniors.  Other material, such as the material on extracurricular activities and academic preparation can be useful to parents of younger students who want to set their kids on the most appropriate track.  The presentation on financial aid would be useful for any parent who intends to apply for need based financial aid.  The earlier they address their finances, the better.

Teacher Background

Christine Hill of Bridge College Counseling is an award winning writer who has written for publications such as BusinessWeek, The Financial Times, The Economist, and Institutional Investor from Asia and the Middle East. She received her A.B. in Government from Harvard College and did graduate work at the American University in Cairo and at Columbia University.

As a college counselor, Christine specializing in helping strong, committed students see and fully take advantage of the opportunities available to them.  Students that she has worked with as a test tutor and college counselor have included Boston College , Bowdoin , Brown, Connecticut College, Cornell , Duke, Fairfield, Georgetown, Hamilton, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Trinity, University of Michigan, Villanova, and Wake Forest .

Voice-overs are hot today! You don’t have to be an actor to get voice-over work, but it certainly doesn’t hurt! With such notable talent as James Earl Jones, Linda Hunt, and Donald Sutherland lending their voices to commercials, films, and videos, one would think that it would be next to impossible to break into this field. Not so! In this class you’ll learn about an exciting new way to get around the competition and actually turn voice-overs into a thriving full or part-time business!

GUITAR WORKSHOP FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS - Special Pricing

This spring the Hingham Continuing Education Program has a unique opportunity to sign up for guitar workshops with Matt Browne.  For 15 years, Matt has been a favorite guitar instructor in Scituate and Cohasset.  Having taught hundreds on the South Shore, his workshops have expanded into several local schools.  This program consists of an introduction to the guitar and a comprehensive study of guitar fundamentals.  It is appropriate for beginning to intermediate students.  These exciting learning techniques include tuning and stringing, sight reading in both notation and tablature, and practice routines focused on helping students strengthen and teach themselves.  Either an acoustic or electric (with working amp) guitar is required.  Lesson worksheets will be provided.
