In 1986 Hingham Public Schools
established the Hingham After-School Program in a response to the
community's need for extended-day programs for children in the elementary
schools. In the early days the program was held in the two Junior High
Schools for 18 students in grades 1 - 5 at the end of the school day.
Today, Kids in Action offers
programs that serve more than 300 students in the schools. These programs
assist parents in providing extended-day opportunities before the school day
begins and after the school day ends for Grades 1 - 5.
Wrap-Around Kindergarten Programs have been instituted for each of the
elementary schools. And the Hingham Public School's elementary METCO Program
has been incorporated into the Before and After-School Programs. In
addition, Kids in Action provides a Pre-Kindergarten component (8:30-11:30)
for children that have turned 4 before September 1st.
Before and after-school programs are
designed to encourage creativity, spark curiosity and awaken the
imagination of each child. Hands-on activities and child-initiated ideas
stimulate problem solving and facilitate cooperation between children
attending Kids in Action. Lasting friendships are formed and nurtured
through the gentle guidance of the Kids in Action staff.
Fun activities, friendships and play are
incorporated into a gently guided daily routine! Interactive, hands-on activities
provide opportunities that nurture the creative, intellectual,
social-emotional and physical development of each child.
Vacation Care is also offered for
children in Kindergarten through Grade 5 during February and April vacation
weeks.
The Kids in Action Staff include
certified elementary classroom teachers, experienced early childhood
educators, and in addition, professional personnel from the fields of art,
recreation, health and psychology.
Through our commitment and
experience Kids in Action has developed a wonderful working relationship
with the children and their families that provide a safe and creative
environment for the children to play and learn.
