We just got this resource back, so you may not have checked it yet. Search
Literary Timelines during appropriate time range. Timelines note the country
an author’s working in, but it helps to have a sense of who else was working
at the same time, and any influences they might have on your author. You can
also search the Ebsco database for literary criticism.
From Facts on File: from Browse, to Events and Topics. Scroll down to
Literature and Scholarship, then choose a subject/time period. Each article
has links within it and to the side about related topics.

and title of work.
But if that's not enough to ground you, consider checking out the Backgrounds to American Literature series. We have two in the library, but Hingham Public Library keeps the whole series on non-circulating reference.
