Introduction:

A friend of mine just caught a spider!  She needs your help to find out some facts about this spider.  Is it dangerous?  What kind of a spider is it?  Does it make a web? Are you ready to help her out?

Task:

Before you can do this WebQuest, you'll need to learn some new vocabulary words.  Please click here before you go any further.

Look at photographs about spiders to determine what kind of spider my friend caught.  Your job is to research a little bit about spiders.  You'll use this Spider Answer Form to write down some information.  You'll also learn about spider webs.  The last thing you'll do is create a spider of your own to share with the class.

Process: 

1. Take a look at the spider that was caught.  You can click on the photo to see a larger picture.

2.  Click on each of the spider links below.  See if you can figure out what kind of a spider this is.

3. Print out this Spider Answer Form to answer the following questions.  You can use "kid writing" to answer the questions or an adult can write for you.

     a. What is the name of my friend's spider? (Common Name)
     b. Where do you think she found it? (Habitat)
     c. Does it make a web?
     d. What kind of a web is it?  Click here to see different kinds of webs.
     e. Is it a poisonous spider? (Toxicity)
     f. Do you think my friend should be frightened of it?
     g.  What should she do with the spider?
     h.  Have you ever seen a real spider?
     i.  If you have, how did you feel when you saw it?

     j.   Visit this website.  Now answer this question.  Is a spider an insect?

4.  Play this online game.  See if you can match the spiders.

5.  Choose one of the methods below to create your own spider.

     a. Draw a spider.
     b. Create a spider out of clay.
     c. Create a spider out of objects that you have around the house.
     d. Paint a picture of a spider.
     e. Turn a small stone into a spider.
     f.  Be creative.

Conclusion:

Hopefully, upon completion of this WebQuest, your child will:

  • feel confident using the Internet to do research on arachnids.

1. WebQuests are NOT designed to be done all in one sitting.

2. Please keep this in mind:  This should be a FUN activity.  Please don't force your child to do this WebQuest if he/she isn't interested.
